I saw the 1984 flick The Karate Kid during its original theater run. And as I sat there and watched it — with my Coke and popcorn and those “Snow Cap” chocolate candies — I knew I was watching a movie that would be loved, talked about and watched repeatedly for decades to come.

The onscreen chemistry between actors Pat Morita (Mr. Miyagi) and Ralph Macchio (Daniel LaRusso … aka “Daniel-san”) was moviemaking gold.

But there’s a specific scene I want to focus on here: As soon as I describe it, some of you around my age will remember it, too.

Then I’ll tell you why it matters …

The setting: Miyagi’s Japanese-style house, where Daniel-san has been learning (the iconic) “wax-on/wax-off” … “sand the floor” … and “paint the fence” karate moves.

The occasion: Daniel’s 16th birthday — which the two friends are celebrating with party hats and a candle-laden birthday cake.

When Daniel-san pulls out his wallet to show off his just-acquired driver’s license, a photo booth snapshot drops onto the table. I’m talking about one of those “arcade” pictures we took with our dates back as kids — this one is a single-color photo that captured Daniel with his girlfriend Ali Mills (actress Elisabeth Shue).

Miyagi studies the snapshot …

Front-and-center is Ali: Blonde, cute, magnetic — the wholesome-but-alluring California girl.

Behind her to one side is a smiling Daniel-san: Dark, lanky, laconic — a happy-and-handsome Newark boy.

Seeing that (and more), the silver-screen sensei grunts to his young acolyte and says: “Look good together … different — but same.”

Miyagi’s point was clear: Sometimes when you combine two very different things you end up with something very special.

While Miyagi was talking about Daniel and Ali, he could’ve been talking about silver and gold.

They’re two very different precious metals that serve different needs and respond to different catalysts.

Combined, however, I believe those two “different” metals can generate hefty returns over the next few years – while protecting smart Wealth Builders like us from the upheaval-laden future that’s careening our way.
